Barrel Sauna Kit vs DIY Build: Cost, Time and What Is in the Box

Barrel sauna kit or DIY build? What comes in a Canadian Timber kit, how long assembly takes, what you still need to buy, and when building from scratch makes sense.

A barrel sauna kit is a sauna that arrives pre-cut, so you assemble it instead of building it. The staves, end walls, benches, bands and hardware are already milled to fit. A DIY build means you source the lumber, cut every stave, make the door and bend or buy the bands yourself. For most backyards, a kit is faster and more predictable. Our Canadian Timber barrel kits cost $5,976.50 to $8,219.50, and two people usually assemble one over a weekend.

This guide explains what comes in the box, what you still need to buy, and when a scratch build can make sense.

What is in a Canadian Timber barrel sauna kit

The Harmony, Serenity and Tranquility kits are made by Dundalk LeisureCraft in Ontario. According to the product page, the kit includes the full sauna structure:

  • Staves: Grade-A solid Eastern White Cedar, single-piece bevels with no tenon joints along their length
  • Bands and hardware: marine-grade T6061 aluminum bands and stainless steel hardware
  • Cradles: solid cedar cradles that carry the barrel
  • Benches: 20-inch-wide cedar benches
  • Instructions: assembly videos and PDFs

The Elation kit adds a solid wood flat floor, 23-inch benches, cedar bevel siding and two front windows with 5 mm bronze tempered glass. It ships in a crate of about 1,497 lbs, 96 by 45 by 44 inches.

What is not in the box

  • The heater. You choose electric or wood-burning separately. We sell the Harvia KIP ($1,211), Homecraft Revive (from $2,986), Huum DROP (from $2,792) and TimberGlow 14 wood stove (from $2,339).
  • The base. A level gravel pad, pavers or a concrete slab, prepared before delivery.
  • The electrical work. An electric heater needs a dedicated hardwired circuit from a licensed electrician.
  • Accessories. A bucket, ladle, thermometer and backrests are optional. See sauna accessories, with packages from $98.

How assembly works

  1. Prepare the base before the truck arrives. Our site prep guide has a two-week checklist.
  2. Receive the crate at the curb and inspect it before you sign. The pieces then move by hand, so no crane is needed. See how sauna delivery works.
  3. Set the cradles on the level base.
  4. Stack the staves around the end walls, following the videos and PDFs.
  5. Fit and tighten the bands, then install the benches and the door.
  6. Install the heater. A licensed electrician connects an electric heater. A wood stove needs its chimney and clearances. Read outdoor sauna fire safety.

Two people usually finish the sauna itself in about a weekend. The electrician visit comes on top.

When a DIY build can make sense

  • You have a woodshop and enjoy the build as a project.
  • You need a size or layout that no kit offers.
  • You have access to good cedar at a low price.

Plan for more time than you expect. Every stave must seal tightly, the door must close against heat, and the benches must stay safe at sauna temperature. Whichever way you go, the heater and the electrical connection still follow the same rules.

When a kit is the better choice

  • You want a fixed price and a finished sauna within a few weeks.
  • You want a manufacturer warranty.
  • You want staves that are milled to fit, without tenon joints along their length.

Compare all four kits in the barrel sauna buying guide, and plan the full budget with what an outdoor sauna costs.
