How to clean a cold plunge tub is one of the first questions new owners ask, and it comes up constantly in owner forums. The good news: a cedar cold plunge does not need much. A cover, a short routine after each session, regular water changes and some planning before the first freeze keep it in good shape. This guide covers the Canadian Timber tubs we sell: the Baltic, the Polar and the Flow.

Know what you are cleaning
Each tub has two parts: the inside that holds water and the cedar outside. They need different care.
| Tub | Water surface | Capacity | Drain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baltic ($2,554.50) | 3/8" HDPE liner, hand-welded and leak-tested | 132 US gal | See the manual |
| Polar ($3,444 or $6,428) | White HDPE or 304 stainless steel liner | 190 US gal | Garden-hose drain included |
| Flow ($7,850 or $8,336) | Stainless steel tub | See product page | See the manual |
The outside of all three is solid Eastern White Cedar, which resists moisture and rot naturally. It does not need sealing to survive outdoors, but it does weather to grey over time unless you treat it.
After every session
- Skim out leaves, grass and anything else that fell in.
- Put the cover back on right away. This is the single biggest help against debris, sun and warming.
- If you use a chiller, glance at the intake so nothing blocks it.
A quick rinse before you get in also keeps sunscreen, lotion and dirt out of the water. That makes every other step easier.
Every week or so
- Wipe the waterline of the liner or stainless tub with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch.
- Check the filter if your chiller setup has one, and clean or replace it on the schedule in the chiller manual.
- Look at the water. Cloudiness, film or a smell means it is time for a change or a treatment, following the instructions for your water-care method.
Changing the water
How often you change the water depends on how many people use the tub, how often, and whether you run a filter and a sanitizing method. With ice only and no filtration, plan on more frequent changes. With a chiller, filter and a care routine from the chiller maker, the water lasts longer.
When you drain, wipe the empty tub down before refilling. On the Polar, the included garden-hose drain makes this easy, so place the tub where the water can run off without flooding a planting bed or the neighbor's yard.
Caring for the cedar outside
Cedar needs very little. Brush off dirt, keep sprinklers from soaking it daily, and make sure it stands on a level, well-drained base so the bottom does not sit in water. If you want to keep the warm color, the habits in our cedar maintenance guide apply to plunge tubs too.
Winter: keep it running or shut it down
Frozen water expands, and ice in a liner, a drain or chiller lines can cause damage. So before the first hard freeze, decide on one of two paths:
- Keep plunging through winter. Follow the chiller maker's instructions for cold-weather operation, keep the tub covered and keep the drain and any lines protected. Placing the tub close to the house also makes winter sessions easier.
- Shut it down. Drain the tub completely, clear the drain and any chiller lines as the manuals describe, dry the inside and cover the tub.
If you are not sure what your setup allows, ask us before winter. It is much easier than fixing a cracked fitting in spring.
What temperature should a cold plunge tub be?
This is one of the most searched cold plunge questions. With ice, the temperature depends on how much ice you add and the weather. With a chiller, you set it within the chiller's range. Pick a setting you are comfortable with and keep it steady. Our cold plunge temperature guide has a temperature chart and a beginner range, and ice vs chiller explains the trade-offs.
Cold plunge tub care: common questions
Does a chiller keep the water clean?
No. A chiller cools water. Clean water comes from the cover, the filter routine, a water-care method and regular changes.
Do I need to oil the cedar?
No. Eastern White Cedar resists moisture and rot on its own. Treating the outside is only about keeping the color.
What does the warranty cover?
All three tubs carry a 5-year residential limited manufacturer warranty. It excludes the chiller, which has its own warranty from its maker.
Which tub is easiest to keep clean?
- Baltic if you want the smallest volume to drain and refill.
- Polar if you want the included garden-hose drain and full-length immersion.
- Flow if you want a stainless tub and the chiller hidden in the cabinet.
