Cold first, then heat: a calmer way to do contrast therapy
Ask anyone new to contrast bathing which part they dread, and the answer is always the same: the cold. So most routines put the sauna first — warm up, relax, and then force yourself into the water before the goodwill runs out. It works, but there's a calmer way to structure it, and once people try it, many never go back.
Start cold, while you're still fresh
Going into the water first, before any heat, sounds harder. In practice it's often easier: you haven't opened up in the sauna yet, your head is clear, and the first minute of cold is something you walk into deliberately instead of bracing against. Two to three minutes is plenty for most people. Then — and this is the part that sells the whole routine — you step into a hot sauna with the cold still on your skin.

A cedar plunge tub holds its temperature well in the shade — no chiller required to get started.
The heat feels completely different
Sauna heat after cold water isn't the same experience as sauna heat on a normal day. The warmth lands slowly and deeply, and a 15–20 minute session feels unhurried instead of like an endurance exercise. Finish with the sauna rather than the plunge and you walk back to the house warm, dry and settled — no post-plunge shivering on the lawn.
A simple rhythm to try
- Round 1: 2–3 minutes cold → 15 minutes sauna
- Round 2: 1–2 minutes cold → 15–20 minutes sauna
- Finish: cool down in the air, hydrate
Listen to your body, keep sessions comfortable, and if you have any health conditions, talk to your doctor before starting a hot-cold routine.

The finish line, not the warm-up: ending on heat is what makes the cold-first order so pleasant.
Setting it up at home
The nice thing about a cold-first routine is how little it demands of the equipment. A compact cedar tub like the Baltic fits on a standard patio and works with plain cold tap water most of the year; the Polar gives a full-size soak. Pair either with any of our outdoor saunas and keep the two within a few steps of each other — the shorter the walk, the more rounds you'll actually do.
